Demand Response Programs

Apply Now>

When your eligible business participates in a Demand Response program, you don’t just save money, you make a difference. By reducing your energy consumption during hours of peak demand, you relieve stress on the grid, the environment, and your bottom line. For additional opportunities to reduce energy costs, you may enroll in more than one demand response program at a time. For details, see the Demand Response Dual Enrollment Options (PDF) chart.

Summer of Savings

Energy demand hits its peak during the warmest months. Through the Summer Advantage Incentive, also known as Critical Peak Pricing (CPP), get rewarded for voluntarily reducing electricity consumption or for shifting usage to off-peak hours during event days. Or, save with our Commercial Summer Discount Plan which automatically cycles your air conditioner on and off during periods of peak demand.

Bid on Savings

Want more control over when and how much you reduce your demand? Sign up for our Demand Bidding Program or Capacity Bidding Program. You’ll have the flexibility to place bids on a daily or monthly basis for how much energy you can reduce when a demand response event is called so you can plan ahead and save.

Agricultural and Pumping Interruptible Program

Willing to let us temporarily suspend electricity to your pumping equipment during periods of critical demand? We’ll reward you for helping ease stress on the grid with bill credits to benefit your bottom line.

Learn More

How It Works

If you participate in this program, a control device will be installed either near your meter or your pumping equipment to control the total load served. When the grid is experiencing critical demand, the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) notifies us that energy use needs to be reduced. We’ll then transmit a signal to the device that will automatically turn off electricity until critical demand—or the occasional test—has ended. You may need to manually reset your circuit breaker or pump controller to restart.

Automated Demand Response

Your large business can enjoy savings and flexibility through the Automated Demand Response (Auto-DR) program. If you install technologies that automatically reduce your energy usage during demand response events, you will not only start seeing savings, but you may also qualify for technology incentives.

How It Works

When a demand response event occurs, a central system sends an event or price signal through the internet, directly to your automated control system (energy  management system). Your preset load reduction strategy is then applied throughout your facility. You’ll always have the option to override Auto-DR signals as needed or revise your program strategy.  Through our Auto-DR Express or Customized Technology Incentives, you may qualify for incentives to offset the purchase and installation costs of technology and equipment that enables Auto-DR.

Time-of-Use Base Interruptible Program

If your business has some operational flexibility, enrolling in the Time-of-Use Base Interruptible Program (Schedule TOU-BIP) could earn you valuable bill credits for reducing your energy use during a system reliability event.

Learn More

How It Works

You choose how much energy you need to stay up and running, and we’ll provide advance notice according to your preference. You will need to supply and monitor a dedicated telephone line to enable us to notify you when an event occurs and a service interruption is coming.

Events are limited to 1 per day, 10 per calendar month, up to 6 hours each for a maximum of 180 hours a calendar year. Depending on your level of energy reduction, we’ll reward you with bill credits. However, once you commit to this program you are also subject to excess energy charges for failing to reduce energy during events.

Capacity Bidding Program

Through this internet-based program, your business can earn payments for agreeing to reduce your energy use during Capacity Bidding Program events, which helps ease stress on the electrical grid when resources become constrained.

Learn More>

How It Works

Your business can participate by making monthly nominations (also known as “bids”), to reduce your energy load and be compensated with payments based on your actual energy reduction when a Capacity Bidding Program event is called. This program is designed to offer you the flexibility to adjust your bid and your participation preferences every month.  You may select to be notified the day before an event or on the day of the event.  You may also determine how many hours out of each event you want to participate (chose from between 1 and 4 hours, 2 and 6 hours, or between 4 and 8 hours).   You’ll never be required to reduce your load more than 30 hours in any month.

Ready to Apply?

To sign up for this program as a directly-enrolled SCE customer, you must print, complete, and submit a Customer Agreement form to SCE. Be sure to include your service address and service account number on the form.

Or, sign up through an Aggregator who has a Capacity Bidding Program Agreement with SCE.

Demand Bidding Program

Our Demand Bidding Program is a year-round, flexible, Internet-based bidding program that offers business customers credits for voluntarily reducing power when a Demand Bidding event is called. We make it easy to participate without risk; there are no penalties for submitting a bid and not reducing power.

An event may occur any weekday (excluding holidays) between the hours of noon and 8:00 p.m.

Learn More>

How It Works

Through the SCE EnergyManager® & Demand Response Tools website, you will be able to place and manage your bids and monitor events.   We accept bids the day before an event. You may vary your bid commitment by hour for each event; however, you must bid in at least two consecutive hours for an event.

Aggregator Managed Portfolio (AMP) Program

Through our Aggregator Managed Portfolio, or AMP, program, we work with selected demand response service providers (or aggregators) to help maintain an efficient and reliable energy supply, reduce the likelihood of rotating outages, and avoid the need for building new power plants. This means fewer greenhouse gas emissions for Southern California.

Each of these AMP service providers designs its own programs, and offers demand response program structures and options that may not be directly available through SCE. Customers may select an aggregator with services that best meet their business needs.

For more information on AMP, view the fact sheet.

Summer Advantage Incentive (also known as Critical Peak Pricing)

During the hottest months, when energy use hits its peak, prices are also at their highest. Your business can save money and help relieve demand by voluntarily reducing energy consumption or shifting to off-peak hours during Summer Advantage Incentive (SAI) events. View our SAI fact sheets to learn more: customers with a monthly demand of 200kW or less or customers with a monthly demand of 200kW or more.

How It Works

A Summer Advantage Incentive event may be called up to 12 times each year, when demand for energy significantly increases. During these 4-hour events (2 -6 p.m. weekdays, excluding holidays), energy charges increase significantly. By reducing electricity usage during each event, you can avoid paying these higher prices.  Additionally, you can benefit from lower electricity bills from Summer Advantage Incentive’s reduced monthly on-peak demand charges throughout the summer season.

View our FAQs for customers with a monthly demand of 200kW or less or with a monthly demand of 200kW or more.

Summer Discount Plan

Through the Summer Discount Plan, you can earn credits on your business energy bill by allowing us to remotely turn off (or “cycle”) your air conditioner as needed. SCE will provide and install a device at no charge to your business, and you determine how much credit you receive according to how often—and for how long—you permit us to cycle your air conditioner during an SDP event.

Real-Time Pricing

If your large business has flexibility around its operations schedule, you may want to consider the Real-Time Pricing rate schedule. This rate is beneficial if you can reduce energy usage during hours with higher temperature-driven prices, and/or shift usage to lower priced hours.

Learn MoreReal-Time Pricing

How It Works

With the exception of holidays, prices under this rate are set according to season, temperature and time of day. Temperature-based rates are determined by the previous day’s high temperatures in downtown Los Angeles as recorded by the National Weather Service. You can sign up for RTP courtesy alert notifications so your business can plan its energy use and shift it accordingly to maximize savings.

Pumping and Agricultural Real-Time Pricing

This program is designed to benefit your business if you have flexibility to shift or reduce energy usage to times when temperatures are lower. Real-Time Pricing sets rates according to season, time of day and temperature, so you’ll be able to significantly reduce your costs by irrigating and pumping during off-peak hours. Temperature monitoring is the key to achieving the benefits of this program.

How It Works

We set rates for this program according to time of year, time of day, and temperature data recorded the previous day in Downtown Los Angeles, as recorded by the National Weather Service.  Hourly prices tend to be highest during the hottest part of the day during the summer season (June 1 until October 1), while hourly prices tend to be lower during the winter season (October 1 until June 1).
