Report an Electrical Equipment Fire or Visible Smoke

Following these safety tips will help you prevent home electrical fires.

Tips to Prevent Home Electrical Fires

  • Call 9-1-1 if you see electrical equipment on fire, smoking, or sparking.
  • Never try to extinguish an electrical fire with water – you could be electrocuted.
  • Remember, only Class C fire extinguishers are rated to fight electrical fires.
  • Check your electrical cords often. Replace cracked, damaged electrical cords. Don’t try to repair them.
  • Don’t overload extension cords or wall outlets.
  • Never use extension cords with major appliances – they can overheat and start a fire. Plug them directly into wall outlets.
