Since SCE calculates energy charges and credits monthly, which can vary from month to month, SCE cannot project your total annual energy export amount and assess any overcompensation until the end of your 12-month relevant period. SCE can determine whether your account requires an EECA once your total energy export compensation has been calculated at the end of your 12-month relevant period.
When you applied to interconnect your system, SCE either determined that the system size was consistent with your historic onsite load, or you opted to oversize and sign an attestation that your load would increase to meet that system size within a set time frame. Load, however, is often subject to variation for many reasons. As a result, there may be times when you generate more than you use, triggering an EECA. Likewise, in the case of intentional oversizing, if you have not yet increased your load to your system size, you may experience an EECA. If you have other questions about your system size or performance, you may want to contact your contractor.
You might begin to see an EECA on your settlement statement if your energy needs change after your system was installed, even if your system was sized correctly at the time of installation. Common reasons for this would be if your household size gets smaller (for example if someone moves out of your home) or if you get rid of an electric vehicle and no longer need to charge one. Changes like these can result in your system exporting more credits because you aren’t using them to power your home or business.
We appreciate all our customers who choose clean energy, and solar plans are designed to compensate them fairly; however, when a solar system is too large and produces more energy than a household uses, SCE must buy that extra energy even if it’s not needed. Since the cost of solar generation credits is balanced by the price all customers pay for electricity, overcompensation for solar customers’ over-generation can affect everyone’s costs.
To ensure fairness to all SCE customers, solar billing rules are designed to prevent overcompensation for excess energy. The best way to minimize the chance of an Energy Export Credit Adjustment (EECA) is to make sure your contractor sizes your solar system to reflect your actual energy use.
If your system is oversized, adding a battery can help. Instead of exporting excess energy to the grid, you can store it for use at night or on cloudy days. This reduces your risk of an EECA on your settlement bill and helps you make the most of your solar investment.
There can be power outages when installing covered conductor or undergrounding overhead lines. SCE recognizes that temporary outages can be inconvenient. The outages are necessary to ensure worker and public safety while the work is taking place. These outages are typically planned and communicated to customers in advance to minimize inconvenience. SCE will work to notify customers by phone, text, email or mail at least 72 hours before the outages so you can take any necessary precautions. Please be aware, however, that timing can change for safety reasons. It’s possible that an outage can be rescheduled, canceled or end earlier than planned. A notification will include a Scheduled Outage Number that may be entered into SCE’s Outage Map to receive the latest updates.
The grid hardening work may require occasional access to individual property, but notification will be made ahead of time to property owners. We understand the stress that traffic can have on all of our lives and SCE will work very closely with the city on public outreach around the traffic impacts so we can make sure folks plan their commute and daily errands around the closures. We can’t eliminate the impact of lane closures, but we can minimize inconveniences by spreading the word.
SCE vehicles will feature the company’s logo. Anyone associated with the work will also carry ID badges.
