SCE’s Smart Energy Program Terms and Conditions, and Smart Energy Program Disclaimer

Complete Tariff Information

This information is meant as an aid to understanding SCE’s Smart Energy Program. It does not replace the CPUC-approved tariffs. Any inconsistencies between this material and SCE’s tariffs are unintended, and the tariffs prevail. Please refer to Schedule SEP Smart Energy Program in SCE’s Tariff Books for a complete list of terms and conditions of service.

Authorized Service Provider Terms and Conditions

SCE has contracted with two Authorized Service Providers to facilitate enrollment and participation on SCE’s SEP. Participating customers will be served by one of these Authorized Service Providers: EnergyHub or Resideo. EnergyHub and Resideo each have additional terms and conditions, which can be accessed by visiting sce.com/sep and clicking on your smart thermostat manufacturer from the “Enroll Now” link.

Eligibility & Requirements

In order to qualify for the Smart Energy Program, you must have enabled technology authorized by SCE for direct participation in energy events. Presently, Wi-Fi-enabled smart thermostats controlling a working central air conditioning system (central A/C) are the only enabling technology available for participation in the Smart Energy Program. You must also enroll your qualifying new or existing smart thermostat through an SCE Authorized Service Provider: EnergyHub or Resideo. These Authorized Service Providers work in partnership with smart thermostat manufacturers to administer participation in the program. Please note that the Authorized Service Provider may refer to this program as the Smart Energy Program or use a different brand name (e.g., Google integrates SCE’s Smart Energy Program with its Rush Hour Rewards program). You must also meet the following eligibility requirements.

Requirements to Register Your Qualifying Thermostat:

  1. You must have a qualified thermostat connected to a working central A/C
    • A qualified thermostat is defined as a Wi-Fi enabled smart thermostat that can be monitored and operated by one of our Authorized Service Providers during enrollment in the program. View the list of qualifying thermostat brands and models here.
  2. Your thermostat must have an internet connection. Thermostats offline for 30 or more consecutive days during the months of April through October may be removed from the program.

Smart Energy Program Requirements:

  1. You must be a residential or business customer with an eligible Edison SmartConnect® meter.
  2. You must receive service under rate schedule D, D-CARE, D-FERA, TOU-D, TOU-D-T, TOU-GS-1, TOU-GS-2, TOU-GS-1-RTP or TOU-GS-2-RTP
  3. You must not be enrolled in any of the following programs, rate schedules, rate options, or services:
    • Base Interruptible Program
    • Capacity Bidding Program Elect
    • Critical Peak Pricing
    • Demand Response programs or rates offered by Non-Utility Demand Response Service Providers
    • Domestic Multiple
    • Domestic Multiple Service 1
    • Domestic Multiple Service 2
    • Domestic Multiple Service 3
    • Medical Baseline Allocation for air conditioning
    • Summer Discount Plan

Note: Residential customers enrolled in SCE’s Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP) Sub-Groups A.4 or A.5, or business customers enrolled in ELRP Sub-Group A.1 may dually participate in SEP. See ELRP Terms to learn more.

Participation Period

Eligible customers may elect to enroll or disenroll from the program at any time and the change will be effective within three business days. Customers may visit sce.com/sep to be linked to the Authorized Service Provider’s webpage managing their qualifying thermostat brand to take action. Customers may also be able to enroll or disenroll directly through their thermostat provider’s mobile app.

$75 Smart Energy Program Sign-Up Bonus

SCE offers a one-time sign-up bonus of $75 to customers who enroll in the Smart Energy Program. A sign-up bonus is provided to customers, in the form of a bill credit, following successful enrollment. To qualify for the $75 sign-up bonus, the following conditions apply:

  • The sign-up bonus is for new enrollments and is available until funding is exhausted.
  • Customers previously enrolled in the Smart Energy Program for the same service account and thermostat will be ineligible for the sign-up bonus.
  • If your service account closes or you disenroll from the Smart Energy Program before SCE can process any portion of the sign-up bonus, your sign-up bonus will be canceled.
  • Sign-up bonuses are limited to one per service account and will not exceed $75. Enrolling multiple smart thermostats for the same account will not increase your sign-up bonus amount.
  • Customers who have more than one service account (e.g., a second home or business) and enroll in the program may be eligible for more than one sign-up bonus.
  • SCE will not pay a sign-up bonus for a thermostat that SCE has already previously paid for. This includes payment to any previous owner of the thermostat. SCE will monitor this by the thermostat serial number.
  • Customers who received their thermostats from an SCE program (e.g., the Energy Savings Assistance (ESA) program) are not eligible for the $75 sign-up bonus.
  • Bill credits will be processed within two billing cycles.
  • In the event that a Sign-Up Bonus is provided in error, SCE reserves the right to debit your account within 90 days of the occurrence to comply with the above conditions.

Smart Energy Program Events

Smart Energy Program events (“energy events”) may be called in response to emergencies, overworked electrical grids, high wholesale energy prices, or for testing purposes. Energy events can occur anytime throughout the year for a duration of up to six hours per event. Multiple events may be called in the same calendar day; however, the total number of event hours will not exceed a maximum duration of six hours on a calendar day. The total number of hours that can be called in a calendar year is 180 hours. When an energy event is called, SCE will notify your Authorized Service Provider up to 20 minutes before the event's start time. Your Authorized Service Provider will notify you of the event and may adjust the temperature setting by up to four degrees to reduce A/C usage during the event. You always have the option to override by re-adjusting your temperature setting based on your comfort and choice during an energy event. However, customers who override all events dispatched in a calendar year may be removed from the program when overrides consistently occur within the first hour of events. Customers removed for this reason must wait 12 months before re-enrolling in SEP again.

For your comfort, in certain instances we may remotely precool your home or business, for up to one hour prior to the start of an SEP event, by adjusting the temperature setpoint down by two degrees. In an effort to increase savings, Time-of-Use rate customers will not experience precooling during on-peak periods, when rates are higher.

Smart Energy Program Bill Credits

Customers can earn up to $50 in bill credits annually for their enrollment in the Smart Energy Program. This bill credit will be provided to customers who maintain enrollment in the program from June 1 through September 30. Disbursement of credits will coincide with customer-scheduled bill periods. Customers who enroll after June 1 or disenroll before September 30 will have their credits pro-rated to the summer season days with which they were actively enrolled in the program. Customers will earn $0.40984 per summer season day.

Authorized Service Providers

The Authorized Service Providers contracted by SCE to administer this program are EnergyHub and Resideo. SCE does not endorse, qualify, or guarantee, and is not responsible or liable for the products or services offered by the Authorized Service Providers. Customers who choose to participate in this program are not obligated to purchase any additional goods or services.

Minimum Usage Eligibility Requirement

In order to remain eligible to participate in the Smart Energy Program, a participating customer’s meter must register at least 1.5 kWh of electric usage one hour before or after the energy event at least once in a calendar year.

SCE will conduct an annual review of customer’s electric usage by no later than January 31 of each calendar year. At the annual review time, any customer who does not meet the minimum usage requirement may be removed from SEP and must wait 12 months before re-enrolling in SEP again.
