I heard that there's an undergrounding project in my neighborhood. Will I be impacted?

FAQ Answer
While an undergrounding project may be taking place in your neighborhood, the scope of work depends on the specific portions of the circuit lines being targeted for undergrounding that may or may not feed your home, neighborhood or business. The project team carefully evaluates the power lines that meet the targeted undergrounding criteria, including limited exit and entry points to communities, extreme potential consequences and other factors.

FAQ Answer

In situations where an electrical line is not undergrounded, SCE will continue to pursue other mitigations, such as replacing the bare wire with covered conductor. This is one of the most valuable tools in cost-effectively and expeditiously reducing ignition risk, especially when supplemented with inspections and vegetation management. FAQ Answer
While SCE is removing electrical overhead lines and equipment and putting them underground in targeted areas, poles that have lines and assets owned by other companies (e.g., telecommunications, cable, etc.) may remain above ground. SCE will communicate the scope of work with telecommunications companies to allow them the opportunity to underground their lines at the same time.

Why is SCE exploring undergrounding in my area?

FAQ Answer
SCE is pursuing undergrounding to help reduce the risk of wildfires and increase reliability during extreme weather conditions. We have identified certain high fire risk areas where it is prudent, and feasible, to move power lines underground for public safety reasons if they are not already hardened with covered conductor and feasible. SCE may choose to underground power lines in areas that meet specific criteria, including limited exit and entry points to communities, extreme potential consequences and other factors. What happens during a power outage?

FAQ Answer

If a power outage occurs, your solar energy system is designed to immediately shutdown for safety reasons. A grid-tied solar electric system does not provide power during outages unless it includes a battery storage system. Your power will be reinstated moments after grid power is restored; however, you may need to manually reset your solar system’s inverter back to service after your power is reinstated (most auto reset after power is restored).
