Why is there a RIN QR code on my bill?

Important: Beginning April 1, 2024, SCE customers on a TOU (Time of Use) or RTP (Real Time Pricing) rate will have a 16-digit RIN (Rate Identification Number) QR code displayed on their bill. The QR code will allow devices you select to see the price you are paying for energy in order to better manage your energy usage. The QR code should only be scanned while using a smart device set-up app, which is not available today for most devices. Contact your smart device manufacturer to confirm if your device can use the RIN QR code for programming.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a RIN (Rate Identification Number)?

A RIN is a unique 16-digit number that tells your smart device the price you are currently paying for your energy use. In the future, you might use the Rate Identification Number (RIN) to program smart devices like smart thermostats, EV chargers, or energy management systems to optimize your energy use when the manufacturer has enabled its use. Once these smart device features are available, simply scan the QR code using the smart device app during the setup process.

Why is a RIN (Rate Identification Number) QR code on my bill?

  • The RIN QR code is displayed on all customer’s bills who are on a Time of Use (TOU) or Real Time Pricing (RTP) Rate.
  • The RIN QR code can be used in the future to program smart devices to manage energy usage based on TOU and RTP pricing.

Do I have to scan the RIN QR code?

  • You are not required to scan the RIN QR code.
  • Contact your smart device manufacturer to confirm if your device can use the RIN QR code for programming. The required manufacturer’s technology for smart devices to program the RIN QR code is not available today for most devices.
  • When the technology is available, you may scan the QR code or enter the 16-digit RIN only if you’re setting up a smart

Why doesn’t scanning the QR code work with my iPhone or Android camera?

  • SCE recommends that customers do not use their phone camera apps to scan the QR code directly, until smart device manufacturers have enabled the required technology in their devices.
  • Contact your smart device manufacturer to confirm if your device can use the RIN QR code for programming.
  • The QR code should only be scanned with a smart device set-up app. If you scan the QR code directly with your camera app, you will receive the following image based on the type of phone.

Are these smart devices available now?

  • Contact your smart device manufacturer to confirm if your device can use the RIN QR code for programming. Most device manufacturers have not yet added the required functionality to their devices to read the RIN QR code printed on your bill.

What future benefits will the RIN (Rate Identification Number) provide?

  • In the future, if you have a smart device such as a smart thermostat, an EV charger or an energy management system, your device may be able to use your RIN to better manage your electricity usage
  • Your energy price information may be used to program smart devices to automatically shift energy usage to lower-cost times and minimize energy use during higher cost time periods.

Is there a fee for using the RIN QR code?

There is no fee to use the RIN QR code.

Why do I have two different RINs on my bill?

If you are a Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) customer, you may see two RINs on your bill. To register, simply scan either QR code, which includes both the SCE and CCA RINs:

  • One RIN corresponds to the SCE charges (delivery of electricity).
  • The other RIN is linked to the CCA charges (supply/generation of electricity).
  • Both RINs are required to register your device.

Which RIN QR code should Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) customers use?

  • Once manufacturers have added the required technology to their devices, CCA customers will need to use both RIN QR codes.
  • We will update this page with more information when available.
