Charging Your EV
What are my EV charging options?
Level 1 Charging
All plug-in vehicles come with a Level 1 charging cord that you can plug directly into a standard household 120-volt outlet. Charging takes longer at this level—typically giving you about 5 miles of range per hour of charging—but it’s enough for many daily drives.
Level 2 Charging
Level 2 charging requires a professionally installed charging station that can be hard-wired or a cord set compatible with a 240-volt outlet. Charging at this level is faster, varying from 12 to 80 miles of range per hour. While you consult with your electrician, you can find rebates and reviews for Level 2 charging stations at the SCE Marketplace.
DC Fast Charging
DC Fast Charging is available at many public charging stations. It is the fastest level commonly used, providing up to 40 miles of range for every 10 minutes of charging. Due to the extreme expense of these stations, they’re not suitable for home installation.
How do I get a charging station installed at home?
You’ll need a licensed electrician to install a Level 2 charging station at your home. But even if you plan on using a Level 1 charging cord, it’s a good idea to have an electrician inspect your home’s electrical wiring before your first charge.
Things to discuss:
● The type of EV you have
● Where you’ll park your EV
● The type and speed of charger you want
● The length of your charging cord
What are the costs involved?
● Level 2 charging stations start around $400
● Installations often run $400-$1,500
● Rebates can offset installation costs
