Why are we performing this project?

We are making upgrades in your area to ensure long-term reliability, improve power quality and make the system more resilient in your community. Please note that this greater effort will require temporary power interruptions and periodic road closures or encroachments.

We understand that this work will temporarily impact you, and we will do everything we can to minimize any inconvenience by reducing outage footprints and durations whenever possible. Please ensure that you keep your outage contact information up to date. You may elect to receive outage notifications via email, voicemail and/or Text (Sign Up for Outage Alerts).

For additional information on this project, you may connect with us at sceprojects@sce.com.

The overall effort will include the installation of covered conductor and targeted undergrounding (TUG) in key areas and the deployment of other technologies to reduce power interruptions due to animals. This project is ongoing and will run through approximately Q3 2026.

Phase 1: April 29

Project Status: Completed

  • Retrofit six electrical assets with underground components. This will reduce exposure of conductor on pole tops.
100%

Phase 2: June 25

Project Status: Completed

  • Retrofit 17 electrical assets with underground components. This will reduce exposure of conductor on pole tops.
100%

Phase 3: Sept. 10

Project Status: On Track

  • Install ducts and sectionalize devices south of Berkshire Avenue, between Dover Road and Woodleigh Lane Underground cable will be installed in a future project.
  • Successful completion will require cooperation from residents, including an easement.

Phase 4: Sept. 10

Project Status: On Track

  • Complete the installation of protective/isolation equipment near Somerset Place and Berkshire Avenue.
  • This protective equipment will serve as an additional isolation point and may allow for faster power restoration. Change in scope due to delayed residential support for access/easement. This portion will be pending until received.
  • Crews will retrofit 12 additional electrical assets with underground components. This will reduce exposure of conductor on pole tops.
  • Crews to install switching equipment and underground cable in ducts that were installed between Aug. 18-29.
  • This equipment will assist in expediting isolation and restoration procedures.

Phase 5: Nov. 11

Project Status: Planning Stage

  • Installation of enhanced monitoring devices will improve the ability to proctor circuit performance and quickly identify fault locations/causes.

Future Phases

Crown and Starlight Section (Covered Conductor Installation Project): 1.6 miles of existing line will be replaced with covered conductor to reduce PSPS risk and mitigate tree and animal interference.

  • Timeline: Expected Q1 2026
  • Status: Planning is on track

Chevy Chase and Fremont Hill Sections (Targeted Undergrounding Project): Two miles of new underground lines will be installed to reduce risk as well as tree and animal interference.

  • Timeline: Expected Q3 2026 (Originally scheduled for 2027 execution)
  • Status: Planning is on track

Hahamongna Watershed Park Section (Covered Conductor Installation Project): 2,600 feet of existing line will be replaced with covered conductor, reducing fire risk and mitigating animal interference.

  • Timeline: Expected Q2 2026
  • Status: Planning is on track

Vegetation Management

Every year SCE inspects approximately 1.6 million trees with the intent to identify conditions that may pose hazard to our communities. SCE trims trees near power lines as a free service to customers to keep the public safe. During trimming, we create a minimum 12-foot clearance from primary power lines.
