SCE’s Commitment to Customers

Continually seeking innovative ways to get more work done at less cost to you; running our business to get the most productivity out of each dollar; that’s the commitment SCE makes to the residents, businesses and communities in our service area who depend on us 24/7 to safely deliver, reliable, affordable and clean energy.

SCE is working to lower your energy bills

  • SCE has issued bonds to finance some of the costs of its wildfire mitigation efforts; this saves customers $1.05 billion over the life of the transactions.
  • Wildfire insurance is expensive and SCE is moving to a self-insurance model for wildfire liability risk to reduce excessive costs; this is expected to save customers about $160 million annually.
  • SCE is saving customers $55 million every four years by reducing the costs of clearing hazardous vegetation around our infrastructure, and another $55 million by streamlining inspections of our infrastructure in high fire risk areas.

Where Your Money Goes

The California Public Utilities Commission must approve all rates charged by investor-owned utilities like SCE after a thorough review. Rates are set through a transparent process of proceedings with the commission and includes public input and participation.

49 cent to Generation: Cost of energy sources, including natural gas, hydro, solar and wind. SCE generates less than 20% of the power it sells. 29 center to Distribution: Grid maintenance and new equipment, including poles, wires and substations. 11 cents to Wildfire: Coated wire, vegetation clearing, enhanced inspections, weather stations, HD cameras, insurance. 7 cents to Transmission: Investment in operation and maintenance for high-voltage transmission lines. 4 cents to mandated state programs including incentives for energy efficiency and protection for low-income customers. This breakdown shows SCE's cost to service customers and implement state policies. It is based on calculations from March 2023.

State Regulators, Utilities & the Public Working Together

Rates are set through a transparent process of proceedings with the California Public Utilities Commission, the body that regulates SCE and other investor-owned electric utilities in the state. It includes public input and participation, and all investor-owned utilities use this same process.

To keep rates affordable and fair, we constantly balance the need to modernize our infrastructure to support reliability with the need to meet state policy requirements regarding such issues as renewable energy. We do that by working with local, state, and federal officials on an ongoing basis, and by keeping you informed throughout.
