Clothes Dryers: Buyer’s Guide
Shop Talk: Buying a Dryer
Because clothes dryer efficiency is not something that is regulated by the federal government, manufacturers are not required to display the yellow EnergyGuide labels and there is no ENERGY STAR® program associated with it. Instead, look for the following features when shopping for a more efficient dryer:
Make the Switch:
Energy-efficiency in a dryer is mostly a result of automatic shut-off controls.
Moisture sensors are the most accurate and advanced automatic shut-off system. Sensors in the drum analyze air moisture to determine when clothes are dry.
Degrees of Savings:
Temperature sensors analyze the temperature of the exhaust air and even though they are not as accurate as moisture sensors they nevertheless work to save energy.
Heat pump systems condense moisture inside the machine to recycle heat from that air. While expensive, these machines use only a portion of the energy of conventional dryers.1
