Meeting Demand for Electricity in Fast-Growing Areas
The San Bernardino County cities of Fontana and Rialto, and surrounding areas such as Rancho Cucamonga and Devore, have experienced rapid growth in recent years. The Falcon Ridge Substation will provide increased electrical capacity and delivery to meet the region’s growing need. Improving the flexibility of the electrical distribution system and providing the ability to transfer electrical demand between other distribution substations within the region will help increase reliability.
The Project will be constructed in the cities of Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, and Rialto and a portion of unincorporated San Bernardino County.
The main components of the Falcon Ridge project are:
- Construction of the new Falcon Ridge 66/12 kV Substation in the City of Fontana.
- Construction of two new 66 kV sub-transmission source lines which would connect Falcon Ridge Substation to SCE’s Etiwanda Substation in Rancho Cucamonga and SCE’s Alder Substation in Rialto.
- Modification of current telecommunications facilities and installation of new telecommunications facilities and fiber optic cable.

- December 2010: SCE filed Permit to Construct Application with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).
- January 2012: CPUC issued Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR).
- October 2012: CPUC issued Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR).
- January 2014: CPUC issued Decision approving the Falcon Ridge Substation Project.
- First Quarter 2018: Construction is expected to begin.
- February 2019: Project completed and operational.
