Our response to COVID-19
We’ve made some changes due to COVID-19, including suspending service disconnections for residential and small business customers for nonpayment, and only continuing critical work needed to protect public safety and reduce the risk of wildfires. Learn more here. If you have recently lost your job, even if you are receiving unemployment benefits, you may qualify for a reduced energy rate through our CARE or FERA programs.

Stay Comfortable at Home

We understand more people are staying home during these challenging times. For more control over your A/C during an energy event, we offer program options with override control.** These options allow you to opt out of an energy event if you are at home and still want to use your A/C. If you are currently enrolled, you can switch your eligible A/C unit to another plan option by updating your preferences.

You can also sign up for notifications about upcoming energy events so that you can be prepared and plan around them. Download the DR Alerts app to be notified on your smartphone.

How the Program Works

When you sign up, we’ll install a remote-controlled device on or near your air conditioner at no cost to you. This will allow us to turn off or cycle your A/C unit during energy events throughout the year based on your program preferences. You’ll earn bill credits from June 1 to October 1 for participating.

If you are eligible for the Override option, you can override an event by pressing the button on the upper right-hand corner of the cycling device. Once you enable the override option, you will not have any more energy events that day.

What is an energy event and when does it happen?

We may call an energy event in response to emergencies, overworked electrical grids, high wholesale energy prices, or as part of testing. An energy event can happen at any time during the year and may last up to 6 hours per day (with the possible exception of a system emergency).

You can find information about active or historical energy events at any time. View Summer Discount Plan Events

PLEASE NOTE: No authorized SCE representative will ever ask you to pay for advice on how to save money or energy through our programs.

*The estimated savings amounts represent the savings a resident could enjoy with a typical 4.5-ton central air-conditioning unit. Savings could increase with larger units and decrease with smaller ones. Credits are based on enrollment in program from June 1 to October 1. Enrollment after June 1 will result in prorated savings beginning from the first meter read date after your application is processed and your device is installed, verified and activated. SCE may need to test the device. The credit amounts and program options are subject to change by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). A customer must have an Edison SmartConnect® meter capable of registering hourly interval usage data for enrollment in the SDP program. Customers removed from the program for failing to meet the minimum electric usage requirement will not be allowed to re-enroll for the following 12-month period. Customers receiving a medical baseline allocation for air-conditioning under Schedule MB-E are not eligible to participate in the Summer Discount Plan program. If you are participating in the Smart Energy Program, you are not eligible to enroll in the Summer Discount Plan. Net Energy Metering (NEM) credits received under Schedule NEM may offset in whole or in part the program credits associated with the Summer Discount Plan. This information is meant as an aid to understanding SCE’s Summer Discount Plan program. It does not replace SCE’s CPUC-approved tariffs. Any inconsistencies between this material and SCE’s tariffs are unintended, and the tariffs prevail. Please refer to SCE’s tariff books for a complete list of terms and conditions of service. The credit calculation formula used is: Single Phase (Amps x Volts)/ 1,400 + .09 = Tons. Amps and Volts values are based on the AC unit’s faceplate or when not available, readings from an amperage probe clamp. This program is funded by California utility customers and administered by Southern California Edison under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission.
