Lighting Tips

  • Switch to CFLs — Replace lights and lamps with energy-efficient ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs, which last up to 10 times longer and use up to 75% less electricity.

CFLs perform best in open fixtures that allow airflow, such as table and floor lamps, wall sconces, pendants, and outdoor fixtures.

For recessed fixtures, it is better to use a reflector CFL than a spiral CFL since the design of the reflector evenly distributes the light down to your task area.
  • LED It Shine — When selecting decorative lights, choose ENERGY STAR® qualified light emitting diodes (LED) bulbs that are exceptionally energy-efficient, and use up to 90% less energy than regular incandescent bulbs to produce the same amount of light. For example, the amount of electricity consumed by just one 7-watt incandescent bulb could power 140 LEDs.
  • Give It Time Off — Reserve using your washing machines and dishwashers until late evening, when temperatures are lower and there is less electricity demand.
  • The Right Fixtures — Select ENERGY STAR® qualified decorative and portable light fixtures for your tables, desks and floor lamps, or for your hard-wired options such as front porch, ceiling, under-cabinet and accent lights. Choose items that deliver convenient features such as dimming or automatic daylight shut-off and motion sensors to help you conserve more electricity.
