Solar Rooftop Program - Property Owners

Building and Program Requirements

Southern California Edison is looking to lease 100 – 150 building roofs to meet this program's ambitious goals. While many buildings are good candidates for solar installations of one type or another, the Solar Rooftop Program program has the following specific requirements:

Building Requirements

  • The ideal building should be at least 200,000 square feet, the area needed to install a 1 MW system.
  • The building should be in an area with a high solar index (strong sun intensity)
  • Preferably, the roof should be less than 8 years old to minimize the need to re-roof the building over the term of the lease. Alternatively, a building whose roof is at the end of its life and will be replaced prior to the solar site's construction is also a good candidate.
  • The roof must be in good condition.
  • The roof should be reasonably flat. (no Quonset huts)
  • The roof should be unshaded with near continual exposure to the sun.
  • A certain amount of usable ground space on the outside of the building is needed to house the system's inverters and transformers. These requirements include about 900 square feet for the first megawatt and 600 square feet for each additional megawatt.
  • Please contact SCE if you are considering participating in the program and are currently designing a new building. There are more options favorable to inclusion in the program available in new construction such as including some supporting posts on the rooftop and preferable roofing materials.

Program Requirements

  • To begin discussions with SCE, a Non-Disclosure Agreement must be signed to protect the building owner's and SCE's confidential information.
  • Owner provides a list of buildings to be considered for the Solar Rooftop Leasing Program.
  • Please contact SCE if you are considering participating in the program and are currently designing a new building. There are more options favorable to inclusion in the program available in new construction such as including some supporting posts on the rooftop and preferable roofing materials.

Program Benefits

  • Obtain a reliable, long-term revenue stream for unused or underutilized rooftop space.
  • Remove the prohibitive up front capital investment burden typical with solar power by externalizing the costs required for installation, maintenance or service to SCE.
  • Further your internal corporate sustainability goals without investing in expensive solar power equipment, installation and service.
  • Demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship and attract like-minded tenants by taking part in this ground breaking solar program.
  • Benefit from positive press coverage as a participant in one of the nation's largest solar projects.
  • Practice corporate social responsibility and help national energy independence as your building will provide clean and renewable energy for the neighborhood in which it operates at the times most needed .
  • Create well paying local jobs that stimulate business activity and bring green business to your community.
