How It Works
- At no cost, SCE will install a small remote-controlled device on your home near your central air conditioner or on the outside of your central air conditioner.
- If necessary, we'll turn off or cycle your air conditioner's compressor off and on during an energy emergency.
- During the summer season, you'll receive a credit on your electric bill based on the plan option you choose and the size of your A/C. However, your credit cannot exceed the amount of distribution and generation charges on your bill.
We May Temporarily Turn Off Your Air Conditioner When:
- The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) notifies us that we must reduce a certain amount of electrical load on our system. The CAISO can call for load reduction events at any time during the summer, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.
- SCE declares a category one, two, or three storm alert exists, which may jeopardise the integrity of SCE's distribution facilities.
- We need to activate a test event. One test event may be called in each summer season. If warranted, SCE may also call a second 30-minute test event to validate operating systems. Test events do not require any specific system conditions before activation.
*The maximum Summer Discount Plan savings amount of up to $200 represents the summer season savings a resident could enjoy with a typical 4.5-ton central air conditioning unit. Savings could increase with larger units and decrease for smaller ones. Based upon a full summer season participation from June 1 to October 1. Enrollment after June 1 will result in prorated savings beginning from the first meter read date after your application has been processed, your device has been installed and activated. The credit amounts and program options are subject to change by the California Public Utilities Commission. Maximum credit amounts are subject to certain minimum usage requirements and vary by central air conditioner tonnage. Customers receiving a medical baseline allocation for air conditioning under Schedule MB-E are not eligible to participate in the Summer Discount Plan. Net Energy Metering (NEM) credits received under Schedule NEM may offset in whole or in part the program credits associated with the Summer Discount Plan.
