Facts About Your Old Refrigerator or Freezer
- Typically, an older refrigerator or freezer uses twice as much electricity as a newer model. Though a new refrigerator or freezer is a significant expense, it will lead to substantial savings on your electric bill.
- California law prohibits dumping your refrigerator or freezer in landfills. Southern California Edison will pick up your old refrigerator for you and we'll even give you a $50 check for your old refrigerator or a $50 check for your freezer when we're done.
- Many companies charge a fee to dispose of your old refrigerator or freezer. SCE will pick it up for FREE!
What Happens to My Old Appliance?
Your old appliance is dismantled at a recycling center where the metals and refrigerants are removed in an environmentally safe manner.

About Our Partner - ARCA and JACO Environmental
ARCA and JACO Environmental are approved contractors for Southern California Edison providing services for this program. The Refrigerator and Freezer Recycling program is offered on a first-come, first-served basis and is effective until funding is expended or the program is discontinued by the California Public Utilities Commission. This program is funded by California utility customers and administered by Southern California Edison under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission.
And The Legal Stuff...
This pickup and recycle program is available to SCE customers only. Refrigerators or freezers must be in working order, between 10 and 27 cubic feet and located at a valid SCE billing address within the SCE service territory. Pickup is limited to two refrigerators or freezers per household, per year. This program is funded by California ratepayers and administered by SCE under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission. Customers are not obligated to purchase any full fee service or other services not funded by this program. This program will continue until further notice or until funding is exhausted, whichever occurs first. Program is subject to change without prior notice.
