How Does the Program Work?
The Energy Savings Assistance Program involves three separate stages, which are carried out by respected community service agencies and building contractors under SCE's supervision. These agencies and businesses have been carefully screened to provide the best possible customer service.
The 3 stages are:
- Outreach and Assessment:
Finding out if a customer is eligible for the Program, and checking the customer's home to be sure it is feasible to install specific measures. (For example, if a replacement refrigerator won't fit into the space in an eligible customer's kitchen, it's not feasible for SCE to install it.)
- All customers must provide proof of income.
- Homeowners must provide proof of ownership.
- Renters must obtain the owner's written permission.
- Service delivery:
Installing appliances and other measures. The California Public Utilities Commission requires installers to:
- Meet or exceed existing codes and regulations, and
- Follow accepted building practices.
- Inspections:
Inspecting customer homes after service delivery to be sure the measures will work properly and that the contractor has performed well. If it is not up to standard, the contractor has to repair or redo the installation at no cost to the customer.
What services does the Energy Savings Assistance Program offer?
Cooling Measures
A qualified customer who has a working refrigerated air conditioning unit that is permanently installed may receive one or more of the following:
- In climate zones 10–15, a replacement energy-efficient window or wall air conditioner. The existing unit must be at least 15 years old.
- In climate zones 10–16, an energy-efficient evaporative cooler (also called a "swamp cooler").
- In climate zones 14–15, replacement energy-efficient central air conditioning. The existing unit must have a SEER rating of 10 or less, OR must be at least 10 years old.
Refrigerator Replacement
A qualified customer who has a working electric refrigerator that was manufactured before 1993 and at least 10 cubic feet in size may receive a free replacement that will use much less energy than the old model.
Pool Pump Replacement
A qualified customer residing in a Single-Family home with an in-ground pool may be eligible to receive a free replacement energy-efficient pool pump.
Weatherization Services
A qualified customer with electric space heating may be eligible to receive free weatherization services, where SCE makes repairs or improvements that help keep a home warm in winter and cool in summer.
Note: Customers with natural gas space heating should contact their local natural gas provider for weatherization services.
Lighting Measures
- Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which use up to 70% less energy than ordinary incandescent bulbs and last 7 to 8 times longer.
- Replacement outdoor fixtures with CFLs may also be provided.
- A qualified customer who has a working incandescent or halogen torchiere may receive a replacement energy-efficient torchiere.
