SCE Commercial RCx Program
SCE’s Commercial Retrocommissioning (RCx) Program offers technical and financial assistance for retrocommissioning services to SCE’s commercial customers. Retrocommissioning is a systematic process for investigating an existing building’s operations. The RCx Program utilizes experienced engineers
that specialize in locating inefficiencies in complex building systems. These engineers work with customers to identify the best ways to improve occupant comfort, save energy and lower electricity bills. Most improvements can be achieved with changes to controls alone, but incentives are available for energy that is saved by the installation of new equipment.
How Does It Work?
The RCx Program operates in seven phases, usually spanning 9-12 months: Project Start, Screening, Scoping, Agreement Development, Investigation, Implementation and Follow Up. To learn more about these phases, read the Program Overview (PDF).
What You’ll Receive
Qualifying SCE customers can receive the following services from one of SCE’s qualified RCx providers:
- Free building screening and scoping
- Customized investigation of building operations
- Free documentation and training on improvements
Plus, eligible customers can receive the following from SCE:
- Incentives for implementing energy saving improvements with greater than one-year payback
Customers participating in RCx can expect increased efficiency, increased profitability, and improved operations in their facilities.
Studies show that RCx typically:
- Saves owners up to 15% of annual energy costs
- Has a simple payback from energy savings, averaging 2 years or less
- Reduces operating expenses, increases net operating income (NOI) and provides quicker returns on investment
Who Can Participate?
To be eligible for SCE’s RCx Program, the customer:
- Must be an SCE customer paying the California public goods charge on their utility bill
- Must own or operate a commercial building that has at least 25,000 square feet of conditioned space with a direct digital control system and central plant mechanical equipment in relatively good condition
- Must be committed to implementing agreed upon RCx Program measures with greater than one year payback within 12 months of SCE’s approval of corresponding incentive application
- Must commit to implement all required RCx measures having a one year or less payback within 6 months of written identification by the RCx Provider. A cap will be set at project start for the maximum amount of customer’s commitment for implementing required measures.
What’s Needed?
Owner must have an Energy Star Portfolio Manager (ESPM) account or be willing to set one up.
