In the future, the smart meter can become the hub of your own home area network, communicating with smart appliances that you can program to respond to signals—like price alerts—and then automatically adjust your energy use. Smart devices like in-home displays and programmable thermostats are coming soon, too, to make managing and saving energy even easier.
