Investing $16.6 Million In Our Communities In 2010
Areas of Giving
Edison invests significant resources in developing and nurturing partnerships with community-based organizations in SCE's service territory (PDF) through targeted philanthropic giving in three areas of priority: Education, the Environment and the Underserved. Grants and contributions are funded by the shareholders of Edison International, and not by utility customers of Southern California Edison.
Education
Edison views 21st century workforce preparation as a key business imperative. A strong, vibrant educational system is essential to community life and helps ensure that Southern California students graduate with the academic and technical skills necessary to succeed in a competitive job market. Many of Edison's educational initiatives focus on increasing math, science and technology-literacy skills.
Environment
At Edison, we believe that protecting the environment makes good business sense for our customers, our shareholders and our long-term corporate interests. We seek to minimize our own environmental footprint, encourage energy efficiency and support the work of organizations that educate and engage their communities in preserving a healthy and sustainable environment.
The Underserved
Edison places a high priority on enhancing the ability of our region's underserved, disadvantaged and vulnerable communities to address needs and create opportunities for the future. In particular we seek to assist with capacity building, organizational development among organizations in that are rooted in their local communities and whose boards and staff are drawn from them.
Past Recipients
Each year, Edison invests in our communities through grants to thousands of organizations, non-profit and non-governmental, whose efforts align with the three focus areas of our philanthropic giving: Education, the Environment and the Underserved, as well as accredited public and private schools, colleges and universities.
Grant Guidelines
Edison's philanthropic giving is paid for by the shareholders of Edison International, and not by utility customers. We provide grants and sponsorships, typically up to $25,000, to non-profit and non-governmental organizations whose efforts align with the three focus areas of our philanthropic giving: Education, the Environment and the Underserved, as well as accredited public and private schools, colleges and universities. Grants are not given to individuals or organizations espousing specific causes, including political organizations and candidates, fraternal orders, labor groups, commercial for-profit enterprises, or any group whose activities are not in the best interest of Edison International, its affiliates, employees, shareholders, customers or the communities we serve.
In-kind gifts of laptop and desktop computers are provided to public and private schools serving K-12 student populations and to non-profit organizations located in and adjacent to the Edison service territory (PDF). To be eligible, schools must be state-accredited and not-for-profit. In-kind donations are not available to political organizations or candidates; commercial, for-profit enterprises; fraternal orders and labor gifts. Qualifying schools and non-profit organizations are eligible for gifts of up to five computers every other year.
