K–12 Programs
Vibrant and meaningful education is necessary to ensure that Southern California's young people gain the academic and technical skills they will need throughout life. Edison supports educational initiatives that focus on increasing math, science and technology-literacy skills. These initiatives are funded by Edison International, parent company of Southern California Edison, and not by utility customers.
Classroom Edison
In partnership with United Way of Greater Los Angeles, Edison helps make math exciting and relevant for middle school students. Provided in the context of after-school programs, Classroom Edison demonstrates the importance of math skills throughout life and illustrates how math skills help pave the way for rewarding careers in green fields like renewable energy. In 2010, the program helped approximately 150 low-income Southern Californians during the critical developmental years that set the stage for successful high school experiences, improved graduation rates and college- and career-readiness.
Edison Challenge
Offering a hands-on approach to improving science education, the Edison Challenge provided students from our region with an opportunity to compete in creativity and scientific rigor, while providing their teachers with tools and resources to improve environmental science education in the classroom. Student-teacher teams developed original science projects related to issues surrounding energy and the environment. The Challenge was co-sponsored by Edison International, the parent company of Southern California Edison, and the University of Southern California (USC). Learn more about the Edison Challenge.
