A Smarter, Cleaner, Reliable Energy Future
Whether you are an SCE residential or business customer, work in the electric utility industry, or know little about it, the Smart Energy Experience is designed to help you learn more about how Smart Grid technologies researched at Southern California Edison are creating a smarter, cleaner, reliable system for delivering energy to our customers.
The smart grid will empower customers to better manage their energy use and reduce their carbon footprint through the use of smart energy devices, plug-in electric vehicles and distributed energy resources at customers' premises.
Leveraging the platform provided by Edison SmartConnect™ — one of the nation's most advanced smart metering systems, the smart grid will enable dynamic pricing plans, and new programs and services to empower customers.
Edison SmartConnect meters communicate with SCE and customers through a secure two-way wireless network. This means they can send and receive energy use and cost information from the home to the utility and back again. The service switch inside the meter will give SCE better flexibility to turn electric service on and off for the more than one million SCE customers who move each year.
Smart grid technologies will enable home area networks, making it possible for the meter to communicate with "smart" appliances and devices, solar installations, plug-in electric vehicles, and other future green technologies.

Intelligent devices throughout the electric grid will soon allow customers to see near real-time energy use information from a computer or other device through new web features on the MyAccount page at SCE.com. By reviewing your daily usage on MyAccount, you are able to make wiser choices for future energy use.
For customers who want to start saving today, SCE recommends replacing lights and lamps with energy-efficient ENERGY STAR® qualified compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), which last up to 10 times longer and use up to 75% less electricity. LED lighting options can enhance energy savings as well. Also, look for appliances with the ENERGY STAR label, as they use up to 50 percent less energy than standard models, and the savings will show up in lower bills.
Building A Better Tomorrow With Innovations Today
Smart Energy Devices such as programmable communicating thermostats will provide a user-friendly interface to manage temperature preferences, and enable voluntary enrollment in demand response programs such as the Summer Discount Program.
SCE estimates there will be approximately 100,000 plug-in electric vehicles within its service territory by the year 2015. The adoption of electric vehicles will promote energy independence and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
SCE is the nation's leader in the use of renewable power, with about 19.4% of all our customers' electric needs supplied from renewable sources, including wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, and small hydro. The Smart Energy Experience demonstrates how SCE customers can harness the power of the wind and the sun at home using residential solar panels, micro-wind turbines, and a solar hot water system.

SCE has led the nation in the development of smart grid technology to move power to customers reliably and safely. We have the nation's most automated major distribution network and have pioneered the use of advanced technologies like Synchronous Phasor Measurement and remote equipment monitoring to help anticipate equipment performance issues, reduce blackouts, and improve electric system reliability and safety.
These new technologies and tools will help our customers make smarter energy choices to save energy, money and the environment.
