Automated Demand Response
(Auto-DR)

Automated Demand Response (Auto-DR) enables customers with automated load control systems, such as an Energy Management System (EMS), to participate in demand response events without manual intervention. The program's flexibility and ease-of-use allows you to pre-select your level of participation and to automatically take part in a demand response event.

How It Works

To take advantage of the benefits of Auto-DR, SCE's Technical Assistance and Technology Incentive (TA&TI) program offers incentives that offset the purchase and installation costs of equipment that enables automated demand reduction – up to $300 per kW of verified load reduction. The equipment will be remotely activated (via the Internet) upon receiving event or price signals from SCE. The flexibility of Auto-DR still allows you to have the ability to override Auto-DR signals and/or revise your load reduction strategy, at your discretion.

Technical Assistance and Technology Incentives (TA&TI)

The TA&TI program can help you identify opportunities to reduce power use and participate in Auto-DR at potentially no cost. Customers receive demand response site assessments and financial incentives for the installation of qualifying technologies (including energy management systems) that enable automated demand reduction to reduce electricity usage during periods of peak demand.

Three steps are required for participation in TA&TI:

  1. SCE performs a preliminary assessment to identify opportunities to reduce power use. There are no charges associated with a preliminary assessment conducted by an SCE-contracted engineer. You have the option of selecting your own engineer (refer to the TA&TI Program for details).
  2. If a technical audit is recommended, it will identify applicable demand response practices and methods and recommend measures and technologies to achieve demand response potential. The technical audit will be conducted by an SCE-contracted engineer. With SCE’s prior approval, you have the option of using your own engineer to perform the technical audit.
  3. With your agreement, recommendations are implemented, tested and automated. The Auto-DR technology will enable you to automatically achieve specified demand reductions (kW and duration) during demand response events. The TA&TI program provides reimbursement of up to $300 per kW saved once the measurement and verification of the installed equipment is completed and indicates the necessary demand response load reduction was achieved.

What You'll Receive

  • Energy and money savings from simplified, automated demand response participation
  • Up to $300 per kW of verified load reduction for installed equipment through the TA&TI program

Who Can Participate

  • All customers in SCE’s service territory with registered demands of 200 kW or more are eligible to take advantage of this program.
  • Customers with service accounts below 200 kW may also be eligible, if all of the following conditions are met:
    • All service accounts participating in the TA&TI program have an interval meter.
    • The customer’s aggregated load is equal to or greater than 200 kW for all service accounts participating in this program.
    • All participating service accounts under 200 kW must be enrolled in a qualifying DR program at the time they enroll in the TA&TI program.
    • TA&TI participating customers include large office complexes, retail stores, large manufacturing firms, warehouses, process industrial facilities, water agencies, and agricultural and institutional facilities

What Is Needed

Each service account participating in TA&TI must have an interval meter.
