HVAC Optimization

Southern California Edison’s (SCE) HVAC Optimization Program offers a holistic view of your entire HVAC system to extract maximum achievable energy savings. By establishing clear goals and performance objectives, you can achieve significant operational benefits through your HVAC system.

The program is build on service and installation work based on the highest HVAC industry standard practices, extensive contractor training and quality control as well as comprehensive performance reporting for your business.

Currently, SCE’s HVAC Optimization Program offers:

Incentives for an enhanced HVAC maintenance plan

SCE’s HVAC Optimization program is a winning combination of an enhanced planned HVAC maintenance plan and financial incentives. This enhanced maintenance plan is based on extensive HVAC research and leads to better energy efficiency, while SCE’s program incentives help offset the incremental cost of the planned maintenance.

+ How Your Business Can Benefit

The higher-level maintenance plan sets a new industry standard and is specifically designed to:

  • Lower your business’ energy bills
  • Increase system reliability
  • Improve indoor air quality and temperature comfort
  • Lower maintenance costs and reduce unplanned service calls
  • Reduce capital costs by achieving longer equipment life
  • Reduce carbon footprint

Rebates for replacing existing HVAC unit(s) combined with installing ice storage

With HVAC-related energy consumption creating a large operating expense for most commercial building owners, replacing your current, inefficient units in combination with an ice storage system can significantly reduce your energy bills. SCE now offers attractive rebates to get you started as part of the HVAC Optimization Program.

+ How It Works

The ice storage unit is integrated with an ice-ready HVAC system to create a more efficient hybrid system, consuming up to 95% less energy during peak daytime hours (typically noon to 6 p.m.).

In the evening hours, when energy costs are at their lowest, the self-contained ice storage unit goes into charging mode, freezing 450 gallons of water to store electricity in the form of ice. During the day, the ice storage unit moves into cooling mode, working with the high-efficiency HVAC system to dispatch the stored energy.

The transformational technology allows the ice-ready HVAC system to operate as usual, but during peak-time hours, the energy-intensive compressor shuts off and the stored energy of the ice storage unit is used to cool your facility. This integrated system dramatically reduces the amount of electricity required during peak-time hours, when electricity demand and costs are at their highest.

+ How Your Business Can Benefit

Installing an ice storage unit in combination with an ice-ready HVAC system is designed to help:

  • Lower your energy costs
  • Maximize your HVAC system’s energy efficiency
  • Improve the indoor air quality and temperature comfort of your facility
  • Reduce your business’s carbon footprint

What People Are Saying:

"SCE's bundled air conditioning replacement and energy storage rebate program combines energy efficiency and peak reduction making the project investment for our new Glendora California Headquarters building an easy desicion. Operating characteristics of the Ice Storage and Air Conditioning systems contributed significantly to our energy efficiency building design objectives."

Bill Camahan, Executive Director of
Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA)

+ Financial Incentives

SCE offers the following rebates for participating customers to help offset the cost of installing an ice storage unit and ice-ready HVAC system:

Ice-Ready HVAC System $1,000 per ton installed
Ice Storage Unit $1,800 per KW

Example
4-Ton Ice-Ready HVAC system is installed along with a 4 KW Ice Storage unit:
(4 x $1,000) + (4 x $1,800) = $11,200

+ Participating Contractors

It all begins with an onsite visit from an HVAC contractor participating in SCE’s HVAC Optimization Program. Your contractor identifies the amount, size and potential location of units, and determines any electrical or structural needs.

The contractor will:

  • Identify potential opportunities
  • Perform an onsite survey
  • Compile a quote and financial analysis
  • Obtain your agreement and submit the rebate form to SCE
  • Order, install and commission systems, including obtaining any required permits
  • Arrange an SCE post-installation inspection

SCE typically mails your rebate incentive check within 6-8 weeks of the post-installation inspection.

Take care of it all at once. Schedule a combined installation of an ice storage unit and an ice-ready HVAC system to take advantage of the work crews and equipment needed on site - it could ultimately save you up to 60% on installation costs.
