Security Lighting
In addition to protecting your home and community, effective outdoor lighting can also improve your home's appearance and value. Light fixtures with timers or automatic dusk-to-dawn sensors make your outdoor lighting system energy-efficient, reliable, and hassle-free. Try these additional outdoor lighting tips:
Twin Floodlights
Using standard halogen or incandescent bulbs, twin floodlights are the best way to light a large area. Install them at or above roof level and point them towards the perimeter of your property.
Halogen Lights
Halogen lights are an effective way to light a smaller area. They mount overhead, focusing light downward and outward. They're also available as metal halide or fluorescent lamps.
Entryway Lighting
Installed around yards and entryways, decorative lighting fixtures can double as security lighting.
Security Lighting Installation
Directed at shadows and dark areas on your property, security lighting deters criminals and enables neighbors and security patrols to keep an eye on things when you're away. Pay special attention to shadows cast by trees and bushes where an intruder could hide, and keep the entire perimeter of your property well lit to deter prowlers from entering. Here are some security lighting tips for various locations around your home:
Garage
Install a spotlight fixture on the outside of your home, above the garage, to illuminate your driveway. This will help keep intruders away as you drive up and open the garage door.
Walkway/Porch
Adequate walkway and/or porch lighting deters criminals and prevents accidents on steps or uneven surfaces.
Yard
Use lights that have enough wattage to reach the perimeter of your property. Install twin floodlights on the corner of your house to cover a larger area. Make sure lights near the street are facing inward so they don't cause glare for drivers.
