Portable Generators
Do not hook up a generator directly into an electrical panel. The safe way is to connect the electrical equipment to a portable generator using a properly sized extension cord.
If your needs require a generator to be wired directly to your home, California state law mandates that you notify SCE. We also recommend that you enlist the service of a qualified electrician to perform the task.
Violators can be subject to fines up to $500 or six months imprisonment (Section 119090 of the California Health and Safety Code).
To avoid the risk of personal injury, only a qualified installer or licensed electrician should connect a generator to utility or house wiring to ensure that all interconnection requirements are met.
You must isolate the generator from the electrical utility by opening (turning off) the electrical system's main circuit breaker or main switch before using the generator to provide backup power to your property. Failure to isolate the generator from the electric utility may result in injury or death to SCE personnel and damage to the generator due to electricity being fed back to utility power lines.
To notify SCE of a generator location, please call 1-800-655-4555.
