Help for Humid Days

"In the California Central Valley, the humidity generally comes in late July and the entire month of August. I had a swamp cooler installed through the wall of my living room to use during the dry periods of the summer; and when the humidity sets in, I use my air conditioner. This saves money on cooling costs and keeps me comfortable no matter the type of weather." -F.H.

Use the Summer Sun

"With so many months of dry, warmer weather, I hang my clothes out on a clothes line. The cost is minimal and I love the fresh smell. It brighens my whites and keeps clothes from shrinking." --S.

High and Dry

"We recently bought a front loading washing machine. It saves energy compared to our old machine because it not only uses less water, which saves on water heating,  but it spins clothes so dry that it cuts dryer time in half or better.  We also use drying racks rather than the dryer for most everything except towels and sheets." -- R.B.

Daylight Savings

"During the summer months, we use only sunlight to light the house during the day. I cut laundry and dishwashing in half by wearing bathing suits outside during the day and using paper plates and plastic silverware!!" -- A.A.

Fire up the grill

"We never cook by using the oven during the summer months, we always go outside with the barbecue. Also during the summer, I hose off the roof of the house to cool the inside -- it cuts the temperature down 5 degrees just putting water on the roof. The kids go swimming at friends' houses and wear their bathing suits at least three days in a row, which cuts down on the washing of clothes. Finally, we lower the setpoint on the hot water heater in summer months." -- V.B.
