Directed at shadows and dark areas on your property, security lighting deters criminals and enables neighbors and security patrols to keep an eye on things when you're away. Pay special attention to shadows cast by trees and bushes where an intruder could hide, and keep the entire perimeter of your property well lit to deter prowlers from entering.
Here are some security lighting tips for various locations around your home:
- Garage: Install a spotlight fixture on the outside of your home, above the garage, to illuminate your driveway. This will help keep intruders away as you drive up and open the garage door.
- Walkway/Porch: Adequate walkway and/or porch lighting deters criminals and prevents accidents on steps or uneven surfaces.
- Yard: Use lights that have enough wattage to reach the perimeter of your property. Install twin floodlights on the corner of your house to cover a larger area. Make sure lights near the street are facing inward so they don't cause glare for drivers.
