Holiday trees add color and festivity to gatherings of family and friends. SCE reminds you to keep your loved ones safe by following a few important tips:
- Remember to water a natural tree daily to keep it from drying out, since a dry tree can pose a fire hazard.
- Don’t place a tree near a radiator, fireplace, or other heat source like a small heater.
- When decorating, use only indoor holiday lights and check for broken sockets, bare wires or loose connections.
- Avoid overloading circuits by plugging no more than three light sets on one extension cord.
- If you use an artificial tree, choose one that has been tested and labeled as fire resistant.
- Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label.
By taking time to put your tree up with safety in mind, you and your family can enjoy the holidays and look forward to the New Year.
