Automated Demand Response
(Auto DR)

Automated Demand Response (Auto DR)

Simplify your participation in SCE's demand response incentive programs. Automated Demand Response (Auto DR) enables customers with Energy Management Systems (EMS) to participate without manual intervention. The program's flexibility and ease-of-use allows you to pre-select your level of participation and to automatically take part in a demand response event.

How It Works

Auto DR utilizes an EMS to automatically achieve specified energy demand reductions (kW and duration) during periods of peak demand. Through SCE's Demand Response programs you can earn generous financial incentives for those energy load reductions.

To take advantage of the benefits of Auto DR an Energy Management System is required. If you do not already have an EMS, SCE's Technical Assistance and Technology Incentive program can help offset the purchase and installation of the system equipment. To be eligible to receive the equipment incentive and participate in the Auto DR program, you must enroll your facility in SCE's Critical Peak Pricing or Demand Bidding program for 12 consecutive months.

If you already have an EMS, SCE will install a Client & Logic with Integrated Relay (CLIR) box which is a self-configuring secure internet relay device with integrated relay. Depending on your Energy Management System this may or may not be necessary.

Note: The EMS and CLIR box are both eligible for reimbursement under the technology incentives portion of the TA&TI program outlined below.

Technical Assistance and Technology Incentives (TA&TI)

The TA&TI program can help you identify opportunities to reduce power use and participate in the Auto DR program at potentially no cost. Customers receive demand response site assessments and financial incentives for the installation of qualifying technologies (including energy management systems) that automatically reduce electricity usage during periods of peak demand.

Three steps are required for participation in TA&TI:

  1. SCE performs a preliminary assessment to identify opportunities to reduce power use. There are no charges associated with a preliminary assessment conducted by an SCE-contracted engineer. You have the option of selecting your own engineer (see TA&TI for details).
  2. If SCE determines that a technical audit is warranted based upon the preliminary assessment, a technical audit will be conducted by an SCE-contracted engineer. The technical audit will identify applicable demand response practices and methods, and recommend measures and technologies to achieve maximum energy savings.
  3. With your agreement, recommendations are implemented, tested and automated. The Auto DR technology will enable you to automatically achieve specified demand reductions (kW and duration) during CPP events. The TA&TI program provides reimbursement of up to $300 per kW saved once the measurement and verification of the installed equipment is completed and indicates the necessary demand response load reduction was achieved.

What You'll Receive

  • Energy and money savings from simplified, automated demand response participation
  • Up to $300 per kW of verified load reduction for installed equipment through the TA&TI program

Who Can Participate

Auto DR is available to customers:

What Is Needed

  • An interval meter (customers with service accounts 200kW or greater will receive an interval meter automatically)
  • An Energy Management System (EMS) or willingness to have one installed
  • Willingness to install a Client & Logic with Integrated Relay (CLIR) box which is a self-configuring secure internet relay device with integrated relay. Depending on your Energy Management System this may or may not be necessary.

Easy To Participate

Please contact your SCE account representative or call (800) 736-4777 to enroll in the Automated Demand Response program. For more information about the benefits of the Auto DR program, visit http://www.auto-dr.com.
