SONGS employees regularly take on the role of educators, whether it's within the facilities at San Onofre, the classroom walls of our local schools, or meeting halls for civic organizations. And, we welcome opportunities to host limited on-site plant tours.
Simulator Tour: duration, 2-1/2 hours; accommodates 15 - 40 attendees The Simulator Tour is for general public and student audiences. It starts with a 60 - 90 minute overview of nuclear power, using slides, video and hands-on radiation demonstration. This presentation can also be customized to cover topics of interests specific to the group.
For the remainder of the tour, small groups are escorted through our simulator control room, will view the pumps and valves that control the flow of steam and water in the plant, visit the emergency facility, and view a scale model of the facilities located on the west side of the freeway.
Tours are suspended when national color-coded threat alerts are at the highest Orange or Red levels.
Participants must bring a photo ID with them. Clothing requirements will be provided upon scheduling of a tour. Cameras are welcome.
All people entering the plant are subject to search. Items such as weapons, firearms, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited and cannot be stored in vehicles.
Persons taking an in-plant tour who have had a medically administered test or treatment using a radionuclide (isotopes of Iodine, Thallium, and Technetium are the ones most often used) within the previous 30 days must bring a letter from their doctor, describing the test, the radionuclide used, and the date and time of administration.
