Forest Management

Southern California Edison's Forestry unit manages 20,000 acres of Sierra Nevada forestland in the Shaver Lake and Dinkey Creek areas east of Fresno, California.  In 1980, SCE wrote its first land management plan and implemented a forest management program that was markedly different during an era in forestry where clear-cutting and fire suppression were the norm.  In recognition of this, SCE Manager John R. Mount and Edison's Forestry program were awarded the Governor's 2001 Environmental and Economic Leadership Award in the category of Watershed and Ecosystem Management.

Forestry Stewardship for More Than 80 Years

SCE purchased this timberland property from the Fresno Flume and Lumber Company in 1919 as the site of a hydroelectric reservoir, which was created with construction of the Shaver Lake Dam in 1927.

Edison's management of the land was primarily custodial from 1919 to 1979, which allowed the land to recover from logging by its previous owners.  In 1980, SCE wrote the current land management plan that outlines the forestry program.

Today, Edison Forestry still focuses on managing and nurturing the area's wildlife, water and vegetation. Community-based forest management assures consideration for community values. Innovative approaches to fire, recreation, and vegetation management have led to a healthier forest and safer community.
