| Southern California Edison uses electrical equipment filled with pure mineral oil for cooling and insulating. The oil is non-toxic and non-hazardous to human health. However, mineral oil is undesirable whether spilled on land or in waterways because it is harmful to birds and other animals and can harm vegetation. Occasionally, a mineral oil spill will occur if the equipment ruptures due to electrical overload, lightning strike or an accident, such as a car hitting a pole.
In order to follow all clean-up requirements set by state and federal agencies, SCE implemented a set of guidelines for oil spill situations. Each spill scene is handled by SCE trained employees, and environmental contractors as necessary. If we encounter circumstances outside the scope of the federal and state guidelines, SCE defers to the relevant local environmental and health agencies for additional guidance. |
