SCE’s EV Technical Center, an ISO 9001:2000 registered independent testing facility, represents the focal point for our work to test, evaluate and demonstrate advanced vehicle drive systems, battery types and charging infrastructure.
The state-of-the-art work of the Pomona, Calif.-based center, established in 1993, serves several purposes:
- To understand and help minimize potential impacts of increasing quantities of transportation connecting to the grid.
- To evaluate various electro-drive technologies for use in our own fleet applications to meet federal and state regulations.
- To assist SCE’s Transportation Services Department in overseeing and maintaining the nation’s largest and most successful fleet of pure battery-electric vehicles. Since inception, our EV fleet has logged more than 12 million emission-free miles.
- To provide education and outreach to our customers on the safe, reliable and energy-efficient use of electro-drive technologies, and to help customers shift charging to off-peak (low-energy-use) periods.
Areas of Expertise
Specifically, the center’s expert personnel:
- Test pure electric vehicle, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell propulsion systems for both on- and non-road electro-drive applications.
- Evaluate and test advanced battery modules, battery pack strings, battery management systems and various types of chargers.
- Work on projects to enable the development of more energy-efficient battery charging systems.
- Assess advanced energy storage systems for stationary applications, such as telecommunications emergency backup power.
- Partner with government and industry to demonstrate hydrogen and fuel cells and understand the safety and electrical system impacts of hydrogen generation, compression, storage and delivery.
- Provide consulting services for industry, and much more.
As a facility with broad-based capabilities, SCE’s EV Technical Center includes:
- Charging test equipment and environmental chambers,
- Dedicated and fully equipped electric vehicle and battery testing bays, plus vehicle maintenance bays,
- A maintenance bay for hydrogen-fueled vehicles,
- A test facility to safely assess and evaluate performance and electric load characteristics of fuel cells, and
- A climate-controlled lab conducive to testing sensitive electronic equipment.
