Safety Tips During Rotating Outages
- Use flashlights during an outage. Do not light matches or candles.
- If you have a portable generator, never attempt to connect it to house wiring. Instead, carefully follow manufacturers' instructions on plugging appliances into a temporary portable generator. Always use it in a well-ventilated area and install them according to electrical codes and manufacturers' instructions. No portable generator should ever be connected directly to a utility line. Note:Â State law requires that you notify Edison if you have a portable generator that is, or can be, connected to your electrical wiring. Call 1-800-611-1911 to request an Electric Generator Notification Card.
- Minimize driving in an outage area. When driving through a controlled outage area be particularly careful at intersections controlled by traffic lights, since the lights may not be functioning. These intersections should be treated as four-way stops.
- Turn off all appliances, machinery, and equipment in use when the power goes out. Leave one light on to indicate when the power has been restored. This will prevent injuries that could occur if machinery and equipment were to suddenly restart. It will also prevent circuits from overloading when power is restored.
