Smart Meters
Smart Meters: Helping Consumers Save
Soon, each of our five million residential and small business customers will have new tools to help manage their electricity usage. Our smart meters will deliver detailed information on electricity consumption, along with smarter web tools, programs, and incentives to help you find new opportunities for saving energy.
Smart meters also play an important role in helping to shift the entire region's electricity consumption to off-peak night hours, which contributes to a more efficient electricity system. President Obama and the Department of Energy support smart meters to empower Americans to save energy and cut utility bills.
Cybersecurity, Safety & Reliability
Our smart meters are based on industry-leading technology with rigorous security features and a thorough testing protocol. They are designed to interoperate freely with off-the-shelf energy-management devices that will come to market soon. Their security is proven, and they will play an important role in improved power delivery and performance.
Tools to Empower Consumers
As we introduce smart meters, we are rolling out new programs, incentives, and web tools to help you conserve electricity. With a text message, email or phone call, we can inform you of special savings opportunities — for example, on hot summer afternoons when demand soars — and you can earn incentives just by turning off the air conditioning.
Smarter Meters for a Cleaner Future
We believe that our smart meter program will help you save electricity. In fact, we expect that it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Southern California by an estimated 365,000 metric tons per year — the equivalent of removing 79,000 cars from the region’s roads.
Smart technologies play an important role in our forward-looking strategy for cleaner energy. Saving electricity is more cost-effective — and environmentally friendly — than generating more. With smart meters to help, you will be able to conserve more electricity, and save money.
