Edison SmartConnect™

Program Benefits

Along with smart grid advancements, Edison SmartConnect™ will change the way customers manage their energy use, through technology solutions, tools and services to help customers make smarter energy choices.

"'Smart' meters will provide long-term environmental benefits and a smarter,
cleaner energy future for our customers."

– Paul De Martini, Vice President, Advanced Technology

Here are some of the ways Edison SmartConnect™ will benefit customers and the environment:

Customer Benefits

More Energy Use Information

  • SCE's new "smart" meters will communicate personalized energy use information to customers through a secure wireless home area network and on the Web, helping customers make smarter energy decisions that will translate into savings.
  • In the same way that some car's instant miles-per-gallon readout leads to better gas conservation, customers will be able to conserve more electricity when they know exactly how much energy they're using and how much money they're spending.

Pricing Plans that Work for You

  • "Smarter" meters will bring "smarter" pricing plans that give customers more choices based on lifestyle and convenience. For example, customers will be able to select rate plans that allow them to save money on energy use during off-peak hours.

Enabling the "Connected Home"

  • The new "smart" meters will communicate with "smart" thermostats, appliances, electronics and solar panels in the home - pretty much anything you can plug in. Customers will be able to program smart appliances and devices to respond to their energy use preferences based on cost, comfort and convenience.

Peak Energy Alerts

  • The advanced communications system will alert customers to periods of peak pricing and grid emergencies by sending a message directly to a cell phone, computer or other in-home display.

Convenience When You Move

  • Customers will have the convenience of remote service turn-ons. If a customer is moving, for example, they no longer need to leave gates open, worry about pets, or wait for a field service representative.

Keeping the Lights On

  • Information provided by the new "smart" meters will inform SCE smart grid operators when an outage occurs and how extensive it is, enabling a faster response for quicker service restoration.

Environmental Benefits

Reducing Peak Electricity Demand

  • The new system will send peak energy and pricing alerts directly to a customer's cell phone, computer or other in-home display, and "smart" homes programmed to respond to these alerts will reduce overall peak demand on Edison's grid by as much as 1,000 megawatts - the output of a major power plant.

Sustained Conservation

  • With more energy use information, customers will be able to make smarter energy choices. This is expected to result in sustained energy conservation, reducing the emission of greenhouse gases and smog-forming pollutants by an estimated 365,000 metric tons per year–the equivalent of removing 79,000 cars from the road.

Clean Technology

  • Edison SmartConnect™ will also contribute to widespread adoption of solar installations, plug-in electric vehicles energy storage, and other clean technologies that will drive greater environmental benefits.
  • For example, with electricity costs usually higher during the day when more is being used than at night when a large part of the electric grid sits idle, electric vehicle owners can charge their cars more efficiently with help from the new "smart" meters. Knowing when peak demand periods are over and energy prices are lower, will allow customers to begin fueling at the plug, instead of the pump.
