Southern California Edison is pioneering a new energy future with Edison SmartConnect™, the nation's most advanced smart metering system. As part of Edison's smart grid strategy, Edison SmartConnect™ has redefined the industry and continues to lead in technology development, program management, and successful application of best smart metering practices.
What does this mean for our customers? It means that soon SCE customers will have new tools and services at their fingertips, to help them make smarter energy choices that will save energy and money. Learn more about the program's many customer and environmental benefits.
How will it work? Beginning in 2009, SCE plans to replace about 5 million existing traditional electric meters with new "smart" electricity meters. The new meters will use a two-way communications system that will provide customers with:
- Access to detailed energy use and cost information.
- New dynamic pricing programs.
- The ability to program home appliances and devices to respond to energy use preferences based on cost, comfort and convenience.
For more on how the new meters work, download the Program Overview (PDF).
What makes the meters "smart"?
Edison SmartConnect's™ "smart" meters have entered the digital age. These new meters will use a two-way communication system to communicate information from the home to the utility, and back from the utility to the home. Wireless radio chips in the meters will enable home area networking making it possible to automate home appliances and devices.
