The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is located just South of San Clemente in northern San Diego County. The plant contains two operating nuclear reactors built in the 1980s that are capable of producing enough power to serve the needs of 1.4 million households. A smaller generating unit began service in 1968 and was retired in 1992.
