Air, Water & Waste Compliance
Air, Water, Waste Compliance and Permit Programs
Environmental laws and regulations help Southern California Edison assure that its distributing operations protect the environment and preserve our resources for the future.
For our utility operations facilities, SCE maintains thousands of air, water and waste permits in order to comply with these requirements. These permits are managed using an Environmental Information Management System, a Web-based data tracking system that informs operators when expiration dates on permits are approaching and when updates are due. Some examples of the environmental permits SCE manages via the Environmental Information Management System
| Type of Permit | Number of Permits |
|---|---|
| Air Quality Permits | 697 |
| Annual Underground Storage Tank System Recertification | 76 |
| Business Plans and HazMat Inventory Permits | 535 |
| Certified Unified Program Agency Permits | 487 |
| Equipment Permits | 93 |
| Hazardous Waste Generator Permits | 25 |
| National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permits | 39 |
| Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plans | 730 |
In addition, SCE also conducts hundreds of environmental self-assessments and audits to help ensure that each facility is in compliance with the most current applicable laws and regulations and to identify areas for improvement.
Our internal corporate audits team conducted over 90 audits in 1999 and over 30 in 2000. These audits cover air and water quality, hazardous and non-hazardous material and waste requirements, underground and/or aboveground storage tank compliance, training records and Department of Transportation requirements.
In addition to these audits, utility operations environmental specialists conducted over 25 self-assessments in 1999 and over 30 self-assessments in 2000.
