Electric Transportation - Energy for the Future

The Bottom Line

At Southern California Edison, we remain at the forefront in helping customers manage their electric transportation equipment charging operations:

  • SCE’s work with local golf courses has resulted in customers installing energy management controls and shifting their golf cart battery charging from daytime to nighttime hours, saving up to $6,000 annually in energy costs per course.
  • With SCE’s assistance, a large retail food distribution center learned to its surprise that forklift battery charging comprised a third of its summertime peak demand. Through SCE’s Peak Load Reduction Program, the center shifted most of its charging off-peak and saved $42,000 in the first summer of operation.
  • Between 2006 and 2007 SCE made detailed recommendations to over 80 customers that totaled more than $5 million in five-year projected electricity cost savings for forklift, golf cart and other industrial charging operations.
  • SCE is assisting five major battery manufacturers to save money by upgrading their battery formation processes with computer controls. Trojan Battery alone was able to reap almost $1 million in 2007 through a combination of energy savings, demand response incentives and equipment rebates.

Tips to Save Energy, Save Money

Here are some key ways you can lower your own electric-drive technology and other energy consumption and shift usage to off-peak periods. Remember to always review manufacturers’ charging instructions and maintenance requirements to maximize the life of equipment and ensure validation of any warranties.

  • Install energy management systems on chargers or equipment to shift usage from higher-cost, higher-demand on-peak periods.
  • Utilize an energy management system or time clock to de-energize a charger when it’s not in use. Idle chargers can still draw electrical current. De-energizing them can save up to $100 per unit annually in idling losses.
  • Sign up for one of SCE’s Time-of-Use rates for electric-drive technology operators. See www.sce.com/AboutSCE/Regulatory/tariffbooks for rate details.
  • Tap into SCE’s wide array of energy efficiency and demand response programs, which offer financial incentives and/or other benefits for saving energy and shifting usage from on-peak periods.
