In this section, learn about:
- How, in a state where environmental regulations and other air quality strategies affect how companies do business, SCE helps customers determine practical, efficient and cost-effective alternative-fuel transportation options.
- How SCE’s ongoing accomplishments and work in electric transportation – two decades’ worth and counting – reduce dependence on foreign oil, protect the environment we all share and support a sustainable transportation future.
California, which accounts for about 10% of the entire U.S. vehicle sales market, sets the standard with regulatory, incentive and market-based measures designed to address the impacts of the transportation sector. These measures also help spur exciting alternative-fuel transportation developments that show tremendous promise for the future in the “Golden State.”
Given that the state’s aggressive environmental regulations and other air quality strategies affect how companies do business, Southern California Edison’s Electric Transportation Department is taking a leadership role in helping our customers determine practical and efficient alternative-fuel options – for both on- and non-road vehicles and equipment – to save energy and money.
We also assist our customers by demonstrating and evaluating electric-drive technologies, while addressing the safety, reliability, power quality and electric system load impacts of increased grid-connected electric-drive use.
And we charge ahead with vital industry collaborations, such as
- Chairing the Electric Power Research Institute’s (EPRI) Infrastructure Working Council Truck Stop Electrification Committee,
- Serving on the Advisory Council for the EPRI Non-Road Transportation Committee and on the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s Technology Advancement Advisory Group,
- Participating in EPRI’s Hybrid-Electric Vehicle Working Group, and more.
Regulatory Drivers and Incentives
Electric-drive use continues to grow in California – already the largest market nationwide for clean electric-powered technologies – as the state’s leaders, businesses and residents showcase their commitment to innovative environmental solutions.

Please note that SCE does not provide direct monetary incentives for the purchase or use of electric-drive vehicles or equipment. However, we do offer business electric-drive Time-of-Use rates that lower costs for charging during nighttime (off-peak) hours, with a similar residential rate under development. See www.sce.com/AboutSCE/Regulatory/tariffbooks for rate details.
