Planning for the Future
Grid Upgrades and Jobs for Our Region
Our region’s electrical grid requires upgrades and improvements along with preventive maintenance. Electricity plays a bigger role than ever in modern life at home and in business. Our proposed plan for the years 2012 to 2014 is designed to meet our 14 million customers’ increasing demand for electricity, while maintaining service reliability for all.
Preventive Maintenance
As part of our long-term preventive maintenance plan, our employees monitor and maintain more than 1.5 million electric poles, 712,605 transformers, and 88,207 miles of distribution lines. We systematically repair electric poles, substations and transformers whose useful lives can be extended at reasonable cost, and when there is risk of failure, invest in preventive replacement of equipment. Planned replacements cost far less than emergency efforts.
Advanced Technology & Renewable Energy
Digital technologies are adding new agility to our region’s electric grid. “Smart” monitoring and control devices will enable the grid to heal itself for heightened reliability. Web tools will put power in customers’ hands to monitor and manage their energy use and costs, helping keep their monthly bills down. New technologies play an important role in delivering cleaner, more efficient electricity from renewable sources. And cybersecurity technologies safeguard our region’s electrical grid, protecting everyone’s access to safe and reliable electricity 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Jobs for Southern California
California has one of the nation’s highest unemployment rates. Implementing our 2012 GRC plan will support thousands of Southern California jobs at a time when they’re needed most. Jobs like building the transmission infrastructure that will deliver more renewable power to Southern Californians from remote wind farms and solar stations to the cities where we live and work. California Jobs: A Forecast. It’s an investment in our region’s electric infrastructure that reinvests in the Southern California economy.
SCE's plan will create thousands of new California jobs and spur economic activity in Southern California. Click on a region in the interactive map to learn how that area will benefit from infrastructure investments.
Helping Customers Save Energy and Money
Over the past five years, we have helped Californians save up to 6.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity – enough to power nearly a million homes for an entire year. And, we have helped customers participate in rebates, economic assistance programs and income-qualified savings programs. The rigorous 2012 GRC process began in 2010, and a regulatory decision is expected in late 2011. Learn about rate changes.
