Above-Ground Equipment (AGE) Initiative

The Above-Ground Equipment Initiative is the result of an Advice Letter filed with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) by SCE that was approved by Resolution E-4329 on April 22, 2010. Effective August 2, 2010, new equipment on private property is now required to be installed above ground. In addition, applications for underground equipment on private property will no longer be accepted. The CPUC action also requires that design and installation of any above ground equipment shall comply with SCE’s Distribution Manuals, Above-Ground Equipment Aesthetics Improvement Manual (AIM), land use laws and local ordinances; however, these ordinances cannot effectively or indirectly require undergrounding of such equipment.

The following landscaping brochures have been created to provide SCE customers with information and guidelines to aesthetically screen pad-mounted transformers and other distribution pad-mounted equipment in non-SCE facilities. View the landscaping brochures below:

California Joint Utility Traffic Control Manual (CJUTCM)

The California Joint Utility Traffic Control Manual (CJUTCM) is a joint effort among members of the California Inter-Utility Coordinating Committee (IUCC). The members include Southern California Edison, Verizon, AT&T, Southern California Gas Company, San Diego Gas and Electric and Pacific Gas and Electric. The team coordinated its efforts to create a comprehensive temporary traffic control manual that is California MUTCD compliant. The manual is endorsed by the California editor of the MUTCD as well as several other local governments. There are 48 different traffic control plans that can be used to show local governments how you plan to safely divert traffic around your work zone. The IUCC wants safety first and is dedicated to developing safe working conditions for their employees as well as for the traveling public. As you read through this manual, please keep in mind that safety is everyone’s business and it is up to each one of us to do our part in ensuring a safe work zone.
